About John

John Seaton Callahan is a Hawaii-raised surf photographer, writer and explorer based in Singapore. A professional photographer since graduating from UCLA’s College of Fine Arts in 1987, John has built his career around documenting surfing far beyond its established destinations.

As a founding member and director of surfEXPLORE, John has travelled throughout Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas in search of remote waves and untold surfing stories. His photography combines surf action with travel, landscape and documentary storytelling, capturing not only the waves but also the people, cultures and environments surrounding them.

John’s work has appeared in more than 250 surfing and travel publications, spanning over 3,000 editorial pages and more than 100 covers. His photography has been published by National Geographic Society, GEO, Lonely Planet, The Surfer’s Path, Carve, Surf Trip Journal Japan and Asian Geographic.

He is also the author of *surfEXPLORE: Discovering New Surfing Locations Worldwide*, a 2025 book bringing together expeditions across 28 countries.
