Find a Surf Photographer

Find someone whose work and location suit the shoot, then send them a brief through their profile. Say where and roughly when you need the shoot, what you need the images for, and whether you need stills, video or both. Every photographer works differently, so the first conversation is usually about whether the project is a fit before anything is agreed.

There is no standard rate. Cost depends on the photographer's experience, how long the shoot takes, where it is, whether they need to travel, what equipment is involved, and how you intend to use the images. A short local session and a multi-day trip with water and drone coverage are very different jobs. Ask the photographer directly, and tell them how the images will be used, because usage affects price as much as time does.

Many will shoot private sessions, though not all do. It depends on the photographer, the conditions and the break. Send an enquiry through their profile with the spot, the dates you are thinking of, and your level, and they will tell you whether it is something they take on.

Commissioning means paying a photographer to go and shoot something new for you. Licensing means paying to use an image they have already taken. Licensing is usually faster and cheaper, but you are limited to what already exists in their archive. Terms vary between photographers, so agree what you can use and where before you go ahead.

Some do and some do not. Where a photographer has told us they travel for work, it is shown on their profile and you can filter the directory for it. Travel costs are normally separate from the shoot fee, so raise it early if the location is away from where they are based.
