About The
The Turquoise Shadow is a photographic practice by Carlos da Silva exploring the emotional connections between people, place and the ocean.
Shaped by experiences of immigration and moving between cultures, the work uses atmosphere, light, distance and scale to examine ideas of identity and belonging. Several years spent living in Hawai‘i deepened this connection to the ocean, landscape and surf culture.
Rather than focusing solely on peak action, The Turquoise Shadow captures the quieter moments surrounding surfing: figures waiting beyond the break, solitary swimmers, changing coastal light and the subtle ways people inhabit the sea.
The Turquoise Shadow’s photographs are featured throughout NALU, published in 2026 by Clarkson Potter, an imprint of Penguin Random House. The practice is also informed by an extensive background in graphic design, creative direction, music and immersive sound.
