About Matthew
Matthew Hedges is a painter based in West Cornwall who paints ocean waves in all kinds of light. Originally from London, he studied Illustration at Falmouth School of Art and Design and has been painting for more than 30 years.
His waves were first inspired by winter storms at Kynance Cove on the Lizard. Working mainly in oil on board, as well as gouache and oil on canvas, he paints the sea from memory and experience, drawing on time spent swimming and surfing. Earlier in his career he painted sci-fi and space art, including three Astronomy Now magazine covers.
